First National Bank names Roberson scholarship recipient

Summer Nicole Roberson, a graduate of Dubach High School, was named the recipient of First National Bank’s 2013 Jackie Woodard Whitlock Scholarship. Each year, graduating seniors from Lincoln Parish schools apply for the $1,500 scholarship. The selection of the recipient was made by a committee of retired Lincoln Parish educators.
Roberson will attend Louisiana Tech University in the fall as a pre-medical student. She will start college with 24 hours of college credit through dual enrollment courses she completed while in high school. Roberson plans to become a heart surgeon.

Birthday Fellowship giving to those in need

The Birthday Fellowship made donations of canned goods and clothing to the Lincoln Parish Community Center. The group is continuing to collect for families in need. For more information call 247-6962.

’Dogs: Smooth debut in C-USA?

Louisiana Tech University may be embarking on its debut season in Conference USA, but the school’s football program could be making a quick impact in the league.
In its early summer preview of the 2013 season, the College Football Focus publication has tabbed the Bulldogs as the “Sleeper of the Year” in the West Division.
Tech will officially begin its affiliation in C-USA on July 1 and be one of seven schools comprising the West Division. Fellow divisional members include Tulsa, Rice, Tulane, Texas-El Paso, North Texas and Texas-San Antonio.

District 5 team off to 10-1 start

Louisiana’s District 5 baseball team is off to a 10-1 start after capturing two wins last weekend.
The “5” squad was a 10-3 winner over Terror and 13-8 victor against the Bossier Empire.
Leading the offensive effort against Terror for the Eddie Parkman-directed District 5 teams were Kodie Tidwell (double, two singles, three runs, two stolen bases, RBI), Jordan Washam (double, two singles, run, RBI), Jonathan Washam (double, single, two runs, two RBIs), Luke Albritton (double, single, run, RBI), Caleb Danzy (two singles, two RBIs) and Lain Kranz (double, two runs, RBI).

Be wary of phone scam callers

Last week the Ruston Daily Leader published a story about a Medicare phone scam that targeted a Ruston resident.
Libby English was called by a man with a foreign accent and was told she will soon be receiving a new Medicare card and that he needed to verify her address and phone number for Medicare. She verified he had the correct name and address.
English said the caller then began trying to learn information about her banking account.

Melba Spillers Snow

Funeral services for Melba Spillers Snow, age 69, of Choudrant, LA, will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at the Southside Baptist Church in Ruston, LA.. Rev. Oda “Tuck” Roberts and Rev. Tommy Gray will be officiating. Burial will follow in the Longstraw Cemetery in Choudrant, LA under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston, LA.

Mrs. Martha Rea Mills

Funeral services for Mrs. Martha Rea Mills, age 67 of Dubach, will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, June 17, 2013 at Owens Memorial Chapel in Ruston. Officiating the service will be Rev. Kenneth Neal. Burial will follow in Simsboro City Cemetery in Simsboro under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston. Mrs. Mills was born September 18, 1945 in Minneapolis, MN to Harold Delbert Buckland, Sr. and Florence Rea Buckland.  She died at her home in Dubach June 14, 2013. She was a homemaker and a member of Faith Christian Center in Arcadia.

Arthur Clifford Parr

Arthur Clifford Parr, age 87 of Ruston, died June 10, 2013 in Ruston. He was born in San Antonio, Texas on December 16, 1925 to Arthur Parr and Pearl Long Parr. He was a veteran of WWII and served in the US Navy. Mr. Parr worked for many years as a dental technician. In his spare time, he enjoyed music, playing violin and playing golf. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his four sisters:  Lucille, Dorothy Nell, Ruth and Christine. Mr. Parr is survived by his wife: Geraldine Stafford Parr; his children:  Laura Elaine and husband Glynn Futch, Sr.
