Fundraiser slated for former RHS football coach Reeder

For more than 40 years former Ruston High School football coach Tommy Reeder has led his teams against tough opponents.
But now Reeder is squaring off against his biggest opponent of all — cancer.
Reeder served as a longtime assistant under Red Franklin at Haynesville High School and served as head coach for six seasons at Ruston, guiding the Bearcats to the 1998 Louisiana Class 5A championship game before losing to West Monroe, 32-14.

Five added to Jackson Parish Hall of Fame

The Jackson Parish Sports Hall of Fame held its fifth annual induction banquet recently in the Family Life Center of the First Baptist Church of Jonesboro.
Ryan Bond, Marty Booker, Lee Humble, Sam Ledbetter and Alden Reeves formed the Class of 2013, bringing the total membership to 27.
Bond was an all-district basketball player for three years at Weston High School, all-state two years, averaging 26 points and 14 rebounds a game his senior year.

LPSO’s stricter stance against drunk driving

There is nothing wrong with taking a drink every once in a while. But making the decision to take control of an automobile while intoxicated is among the most selfish and reckless decisions that one can make. The second someone decides to commandeer a vehicle while drunk, he is instantly assuming responsibility for people’s lives on the road. No one should have that kind of power in their grasp, let alone during a time when he or she is inebriated to the point of not being able to make rational decisions.

'Digital dementia' affects memory

In this day and age everywhere you look a person can be seen with their head in a cell phone, tablet or other electronic device.
A recent study from South Korea found that individuals who rely heavily on technology may suffer a deterioration in cognitive abilities such as short-term memory dysfunction.
Dubbed with the name “digital dementia” the new cognitive condition has been discovered to be afflicting people in their teens and 20s.
I am guilty of being too absorbed in my phone as well, but not quite as much as my younger siblings or cousins.

Treat others like a child of God

Have you ever had somebody you loved and respected very much teach you a lesson that you still remember to this day? I have. My lesson giver was my sixth grade teacher Ms. Flora Colvin. This was back in Dubach in the 60’s before the all-white schools had fully integrated with the all-black Hopewell schools.

Alicia Johnson Pesnell

Funeral services will be held for Alicia Johnson Pesnell, age 49, at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, August 17, 2013, at the First United Methodist Church in Gibsland. The interment will follow at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Friday, August 16, 2013 at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Arcadia.
Mrs. Pesnell was born November 24, 1963, in Shreveport, LA to J.R. and Bettye Kimball Johnson. She entered into rest on August 13, 2013. Mrs. Pesnell was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Gibsland.

Lora (Puddin) Skinner Dring

Lora (Puddin) Skinner Dring was born September 23, 1917 to Charlie and Gertrude Skinner. She went to live with her heavenly Father on August 14, 2013 at the age of 95. Services will be held Saturday morning at 10:00 AM at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston. Officiating the services will be Dr. Michael Hawley. Visitation will be Friday night from 5-7 PM at the Funeral Home. She is preceded in death by her husband: Arvel Frank “Pat” Dring, 5 brothers, and 3 sisters. Mrs.
