Annual festivities continue

Each year Ruston is swarmed with people from different places and various backgrounds coming to enjoy the festivities that the Louisiana Peach Festival has to offer.
If you have been following the festival details, I’m sure you know all about the events that are on tap today and Saturday.
No need to repeat them yet again.
More than 60 years ago there weren’t many peaches being grown for commercial purposes, most were grown on a small-scale family farm. It wasn’t until 1947 that area peach growers bannded together to form the Louisiana Fruit Growers Association.

When asked why she allowed her then-10-year-old daughter to craft a Mohawk out of her hair, singer Jada Pinkett-Smith flatly replied that “girls are constantly reminded ... that their bodies are not their own, nor their power or self determination ... little girls have the right to own themselves ... [and] not be a slave to...what a culture believes a little girl should be.”

Torbush to guide ETS

Ex-Tech leader set as Buccaneers’ new head coach

Carl Torbush is returning to the sidelines.
After a one-year hiatus from the football coaching profession, the former Louisiana Tech University head coach will be officially announced on Friday as the head coach at East Tennessee State University.
The Johnson City, Tenn.-based program reinstated its football program earlier this year after discontinuing it in 2003.
Torbush, a native of East Spencer, N.C., will be presented at a press conference at ETSU this afternoon.

Weatherspoon praises Tech’s new assistants

Teresa Weatherspoon likes what she has signed on to the coaching staff for women’s basketball at Louisiana Tech University.
The head coach of the Lady Techsers unveiled the hiring of new assistants Mike Ekanem and Drew Miller earlier this week.
Both Ekanem and Miller will serve as assistant coaches for Weatherspoon and the Lady Techsters as the sixth-year LA Tech head coach still has one coaching vacancy and the director of basketball operations position to fill.

Baseball, softball top SWAC in classroom

GRAMBLING — For Grambling State University athletics, there’s the proverbial “good news, not-so-good” story regarding scholastic work during the 2012-13 season.
First, the not-so-good news: The men’s basketball team was one of seven Southwestern Athletic Conference squads pinned with postseason eligibility for 2013-14 by the NCAA for low Academic Progress Rate marks.
But then there’s some good news for Tiger Nation: the baseball, softball and bowling teams ranked No. 1 in APR numbers among league members.
