Club News: The Junior Guild

The Junior Guild of Ruston recently completed their club year with their annual spring picnic on April 25.
Appetizers and desserts were prepared by hostess Andrea Young and her committee — Jane Ball, Mary Lou McKinney and Miriam Savage. Sandwich and chips were provided by Sundown.

Join the Relay for Life and fight against cancer

Those of us whose lives have been affected by cancer know all too well about the devastating effects of the disease.
Most people here in Lincoln Parish and elsewhere in the United States have seen the suffering of friends or family members, or they’ve experienced it themselves.
In Louisiana there is an estimated 24,903 new cases of cancer that will be diagnosed in 2013. Across the country, the American Cancer Society (ACS) estimates that more than 1,500 people die of cancer each day.

Watch out for distracted driving

With the summer quickly approaching, it is always nice to get out and about. It is a great time to get together with friends you don’t see enough of. I am sure we all have those friends who we go for months on end intending to talk to, but something comes up. You don’t want to lose that time, but with “good friends,” you never really do. You call or haphazardly end up in the same store, and it is as if time has never passed.

MCS hits 50 employee mark

Mortgage Contracting Services LLC (MCS), a nationwide provider of property preservation, inspections and REO property maintenance to the financial services industry, is happy to announce that its new operations center in Ruston, recently hired its 50th employee.
The 10,300-square-foot facility, which opened for business last August, is MCS’ third site, in addition to locations in Plano, Texas, and Tampa, Fla. The center, which handles work order review and quality control functions, is ultimately expected to create 90 jobs, with the capacity to expand to 180 jobs.

Parish park to host XTERRA

Rustman Challenge to help highlight weekend event

History is on the side of Lincoln Parish Park when it comes to hosting one of the nation’s top off-road adventure events.
This weekend, the nationally-acclaimed race course will serve as the site of two different XTERRA-affiliated events.
On Sunday, there is the XTERRA Gator Terra, which is the longest running XTERRA event in the continental U.S.
It’s a record 17 years and counting for Ruston to host the Gator Terra.
But before that event is the recently added “XTERRA Epic — The Rustman” to be held on Saturday. For a record fourth straight year, the park will serve as its site.

Ruston, Creek at state track meets

Ruston High had a combined 11 individuals and two relay teams earn qualification for the 2013 Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class 5A state track and field meet at the recently held 1-5A regional meet in Shreveport.
With that meet, the RHS squads got in their prepatory mode for the annual LHSAA Class 5A meet to be held at Bernie Mooroe Stadium on the campus of LSU in Baton Rouge on Saturday.
The Lady Bearcats qualified the following individuals/relays for state:

Patton, Harbaugh already hit it off

SAN FRANCISCO — In the first move of his NFL career, 49ers rookie wide receiver Quinton Patton mistakenly ran a fly route.
And his head coach couldn’t be more thrilled.
In fact, Jim Harbaugh can’t wait to envelop Patton in a bear hug when the fourth-round pick arrives next week for the team’s rookie minicamp. “He’s already my favorite guy,” Harbaugh said earlier this week.

Mills’ pact

Former Louisiana Tech University offensive line star Jordan Mills has signed a four-year contract with the Chicago Bears for a reported $2,324,800.
The 6-5 and 310-pound tackle who was a fifth-round pick of the Chicago Brars in the recent NFL draft received a bonus of $164,000.
Mills earned All-Western Athletic Conference honors during the 2012 season while helping the Bulldogs rank No. 1 nationally for scoring offense (51.5 ppg).

Grambling’s Perez earns SWAC award

GRAMBLING — Grambling State University pitcher Angela Perez has been chosen as the softball Pitcher of the Week in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
The 5-6 junior from Mt. Pleasant, Texas, earned the honor after compiling a 3-0 record during the past week when the Lady Tigers clinched a berth in the league’s annual postseason tournament.
Perez hurled three complete games, scattered 20 hits and allowed six earned runs in six innings for a 2.00 earned run average. She also had 16 strikeouts and only four walks.
