Tuesday night storms knock out power around region

A strong group of thunderstorms rocked the region late Tuesday night, causing widespread power outages that have lasted into this morning.
Entergy Customer Service Manager Jim Pesnell said that 5,000 area residences were without power at the peak of Tuesday night’s storms and that 1,300 remained powerless as of this morning.
“Those 1,300 outages are the result of about 62 cases of problems like downed lines from tree limbs and that kind of thing,” Pesnell said.

Kinesiology students, faculty from Tech present at national conference

Current and former graduate students, and faculty from Louisiana Tech University’s kinesiology department had the opportunity to present their research to colleagues from across the country last week at the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s (NSCA) 2013 National Conference in Las Vegas, Nev.

RPAR gears up for fall sports leagues

Registration is officially open for our fall leagues: youth soccer and flag football. We are also registering teams for our fall adult 7-on-7 flag football league.
Once you have registered your aspiring ‘lil athlete, it is time to gear up with the proper equipment. At Ruston Parks and Recreation, we stress the importance of child safety.

Visit parks for picnic month

Our community has an abundance of treasure tucked away all around the parish, and while we celebrate National Picnic Month we should take the time to see each and every one of them.
The community has access to a number of parks including Lincoln Parish Park, located off Louisiana Highway 33. The park has a lake, numerous walking trails and playground equipment for children.
On the other hand the Ruston Parks and Recreation Department also has a number of parks all over the city that area residents can enjoy.

Jindal hasn't learned politics

One can almost excuse state Rep. John Bel Edwards for getting a little huffy over Gov. Bobby Jindal’s recent remarks characterizing Democrats as basically immoral, of little faith and participants in a “new reign of politically correct terror.”
After all, as Edwards, leader of Louisiana’s House Democratic Caucus and potential gubernatorial candidate, properly points out, there are a sizeable number of Louisiana voters who don’t belong to the Republican Party. That’s true, even though they often vote for GOP candidates, including Jindal.

Prep work begins at Garrett Stadium

Renovations won’t be completed until after 2013 football season ends

Bearcat fans driving by L.J. “Hoss” Garrett Football Stadium at Ruston High School in recent days have noticed preparations going on for a facelift to the facility.
But while those preparations will be noticed during the upcoming season, it won’t be until next season that renovations will really be noticed.

Tech golf team to compete in prestigious Golfweek event

Louisiana Tech will represent Conference USA at the 2013 Golfweek Conference Challenge as the prestigious invitation-only event headlines the fall schedule for head coach Jeff Parks and the Bulldogs.
Tech will be one of 15 teams participating in the season-opening event held at Spirit Hollow Golf Course in Burlington, Iowa on Sept. 15 through 17 as the Bulldogs will compete against some of the top teams in the country, including LSU, Arizona, Oklahoma, Virginia Tech, Iowa, New Mexico and Houston.

Last week to register for Top Dawg Camp

Head coach Wade Simoneaux’s annual Top Dawg High School Baseball Camp is set to begin Monday at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park with walk-up registrations welcome for campers in Grades 8-12.
This is the final week campers can register online before the three-day camp begins. Walk-up registration for the high school showcase will begin at 9 a.m. for the high school camp lasting from Monday through Wednesday, July 31.

Mrs. Beulah Clark Douget

Funeral services for Mrs. Beulah Clark Douget, age 92 of Arcadia, will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday, July 25, 2013 at Owens Memorial Chapel. Burial will be at 3:30 PM at Campbell Cemetery in Pine Prairie, LA under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston.

Sara Susanne Lowe Parker, 36, of Ruston, Louisiana departed this life to be with her Lord on Monday, July 22nd, 2013, after suffering complications from pneumonia. Sara resided in Ruston, Louisiana with her beloved husband, Ruston Police Department Captain Tim Parker, and their children, Elizabeth Erin Parker (17), Brett Anthony Parker (10), and Erin Katherine Parker (7).
