Summer Heat yields five arrests

Local law enforcement has made five more arrests in conjunction with Operation Summer Heat.
At approximately 7:51 p.m. Tuesday Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office and Lincoln Parish Narcotics Enforcement Team conducted a search warrant at 3020 Paul Ave.

Local ladies to rock the clock

Piney Hills Harmony director Sheila Nugent, of Ruston (center), joins the Sweet Adelines in song during 2012’s “Rock Around the Clock.” An updated and expanded version of the show that brings three decades of music back to the stage will be presented at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Jack Howard Theater at the Monroe Civic Center. Six other local residents are members of the Ruston-based chorus, including Nugent’s mother, Judy Stepp and Suzy Henderson. Tickets are available at the Monroe Civic Center box office or through Ticketmaster.

ULS bestows honorary title on Tech’s Reneau

The Board of Supervisors for the University of Louisiana System today named Daniel Reneau president emeritus of Louisiana Tech University. Reneau retired from Louisiana Tech in June after serving 46 years, including 26 years as president.
An emeritus position is one of the highest academic honors awarded to professors and administrators — usually on the occasion of their retirement. While campus presidents can bestow an emeritus title to a university employee, a president emeritus title must be recommended by the University of Louisiana System president and approved by the board.

5th District sign-up ends today

For anyone eyeing the 5th District congressional seat, decision time is here. Since press time Tuesday, two additional candidates have thrown their name in the hat.
Henry Herford, a Libertarian, of Delhi, and Blake Weatherly, a Republican, of Calhoun, seeking his first elected office, have both decided to join the race.
There are only a few hours left for interested contenders to qualify to be on the Oct. 19 ballot.

LPFD douses two fires

Last weekend, the Lincoln Parish Fire Department responded to two fires. The first was a structure fire that occurred Saturday at 145 Chesboro St.
The owner was asleep when the fire started in the kitchen around the stove.

LifeShare: Blood donations lower than summer needs

At the LifeShare donation center in the Graham Shopping Center, there have been low amounts of blood donations this summer, one of the times of the year when blood is most needed.
To attract more donors throughout August, LifeShare has started to give away free limited edition T-shirts, and if a donor brings a friend they both can receive a LifeShare cap.
John Caldwell, an apheresis technician at the LifeShare Blood Center, said this summer hasn’t been quite as productive because of the amount of residents on vacation.

Claiborne Electric General Manager and CEO Mark Brown wants to warn Co-op members and area residents about a utility scam currently taking place in the area.
Late last week, a member services representative in the Homer office received a call from a Claiborne Electric member in north Webster Parish.
