Chad Edward Simmons, 42, passed away April 30, 2013. A memorial service was held May 4, 2013 at Griffin Funeral Home, West Monroe, LA. He was born November 16, 1970, Belle Chase, LA to Gaylon D. Simmons and Gloria Annette Turner.

Search for RHS principal continues

The Ruston High School Bearcats will have to wait another month to find out who their next leader will be after a resolution to continue the search for a new principal was passed unanimously at Tuesday night’s Lincoln Parish School Board meeting.
Current principal Mike Milstead will be moving up to a position as chief academic officer in the central office as of July 1, leaving the RHS principal position vacant.

Suspect arrested in robberies

On March 29, the Ruston Police Department received a report of an armed robbery at the Hampton Inn. 
According to a press release from the RPD, a lone male subject, armed with a handgun, allegedly entered the hotel lobby and demanded the cash from the register, then left without further incident. A subsequent robbery occurred at a convenience store in Calhoun several days later and a joint investigation conducted by the Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office and the RPD linked the two crimes.

Opening postseason play: WAC softball tourney begins today

The 2013 Western Athletic Conference Softball Tournament opens today when Texas State faces UTSA at 4:30 p.m. at the newly-renovated Lady Techster Softball Complex. Louisiana Tech will then host UT Arlington at 7 p.m. tonight in its first game of the double elimination tournament which lasts through Saturday. Tonight’s game can be heard on the Tech Sports Network on KPCH 99.3 FM with the pregame show starting at 6:45 p.m. Tickets for the event can be purchased at the facility starting 90 minutes before the first game each day. Feds offer $10K reward

Authorities seek information on post office burglary

A $10,000 reward is being offered to anyone with any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the burglary of the Grambling Post Office that occurred during the night of April 22. Grambling Police Chief Tommy Clark discussed the reward, with little detail to the actual crime, during the regularly scheduled Grambling meeting on May 2.

Mobile home fire reported

At 9:40 p.m. Monday, the Lincoln Parish Fire Department, directed by Chief Dennis Ford, was requested to respond to a structure fire at 216 Garr Road, close to Grambling.
The homeowner reported she saw fire on the outside of the trailer. The fire was contained to the kitchen area with heavy damage in that area, and heat smoke damage in the remaining part of the structure.

A brief history lesson on the game of softball

You might think that softball was derived from baseball, but you would be mistaken. The game of softball originated in Chicago on Thanksgiving Day in 1887. A group of about 20 college men gathered in the gymnasium of the Farragut Boat Club in order to hear the outcome of the Harvard-Yale football game. After Yale’s victory was announced and bets were paid off, one of the men picked up a stray boxing glove and threw it at someone who hit it with a pole.
George Hancock was the young man who threw the glove and is considered to be the inventor of softball.
