Told about James “Jimmy” Jones being a member of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame induction class of 2013, Wright said:
“You mean Jimmy isn’t there already? You have to be kidding me. He should’ve been in there sooner.”

Tech players named to C-USA team

Kenneth Dixon hasn’t even played a down against Conference USA foes yet, but he’s already making quite an impression.
One of the nation’s top first-year players in 2012 has been selected to the first unit of the preseason All-Conference team announced by Phil Steele’s College Football Magazine for 2013.
And while the Louisiana Tech University running back won’t collide with a C-USA defense until Tulane comes into Ruston on Sept. 12, he will be entering the upcoming season with the most ground gaining yards of any player.

Techsters sign juco post player

Louisiana Tech University head coach Teresa Weatherspoon announced Tuesday that the Lady Techsters have signed junior college post player TyJae’ Chenevert to scholarship papers.
The 6-3 post player played her sophomore season at Diablo Valley Junior College in California and her freshman year at State Fair Community College in Missouri.

Vyleria Mae Walton Dunn

Vyleria Mae Walton Dunn of Camden, AR passed away Friday, June 21 at parkway Health Center in Little Rock, AR. She is the wife of the late Rev. I.R. Dunn and mother of Othell (Maude), Israel Jr. (preceded her in death(, Luther and Gerald. Funeral Services will be Friday, June 28, 11:00 am at St. Paul B.C. in Camden, AR. The church is located at 896 S. Adams Ave. Burial is Saturday, June 29 at Mt. Zion #2 cemetery in Dubach, LA. Visitation prior to the burial will be from 11:00 am to 12:00 in the church. Family business moves

Chessy’s Boutique and Tanning Salon comes to Ruston

Two years ago, a mother and daughter decided to open up a little boutique and tanning salon together.
Chessy’s Boutique and Tanning Salon was originally opened in Arcadia, but since March the store has been located in the North Village Shopping Center.
Sheila Branch, owner, said the move was a good thing for the business.
“It’s closer to home and the space is a lot bigger than where we were at,” she said. “When we first opened the store, it was my daughter Chelsea who wanted to really do it.”

Dubach trailer fully engulfed

LPFD reponds to structure fire, wreck over weekend

The Lincoln Parish Fire Department responded to two separate incidents over the weekend.
At 1:24 p.m. Saturday, the LPFD was requested for mutual aid to a motor vehicle accident at U.S. Highway 167 and McNeil Street.
LPFD arrived on scene to find a vehicle overturned in the ditch. All occupants had exited the vehicle, and no fire was involved.
LPFD had two apparatus and four personnel on scene to assist with treatment and care of patients. The Ruston Fire Department and Pafford Ambulance Service transported individuals to the Northern Louisiana Medical Center Emergency Room.

Local to participate in LPB STEM panel

Occupations in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) are projected to grow by nearly 10 percent over the next five years.
Experts estimate Louisiana alone will have 69,000 STEM job vacancies by 2018.
But who will fill these positions?   
Nationwide, more than 300,000 jobs are currently being left vacant because employers can’t find individuals skilled enough in STEM.
In Louisiana, 40 percent of eighth graders report never designing a science project. Only 3 percent of high-school seniors take advanced college placement tests in science.

Tech listed in Top 25 underrated schools

Business Insider, a news and information website that provides financial, tech, entertainment, media and digital industry analysis and commentary, has ranked Louisiana Tech University No. 11 in the nation in its “25 Most Underrated Colleges In America” list recently released.
Tech was the only institution from Louisiana to make the list, which included schools such as Oregon State University, the University of Houston, Texas Tech University and San Diego State University. The University of Massachusetts — Lowell was ranked as the No. 1 most underrated institution.
