Miss Dixie Gem Peach crowned

The Peach Fest came to a close with the crowning of Angela Cassels, of West Monroe, as the 63rd Miss Dixie Gem Peach. Also crowned for the Miss’ Division were — Miss Spirit of Ruston Anna Blake; first runner up Elisa Aviles; and second runner up Lindsay King.
Meagan Crews was crowned Miss Dixie Gem Peach Outstanding Teen. Others crowned in the Teen division of the pageant were Miss Spirit of Ruston Natalie Nicholson; first runner up Madalyn Bell; and second runner up Madelynn Skipper.

Rape arrest made

A Choudrant teen was booked into the Lincoln Parish Detention Center for aggravated rape following a tip the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office received in reference to 19-year-old Hunter Mickhail Tippen having sexual relations with a 12-year-old juvenile.
According to reports, a parent of the juvenile phoned in the tip, which led investigators to interview both parents and the juvenile.
The detective then interviewed the accused, where he allegedly admitted to having sex with the juvenile but claimed he thought she was 16-years-old.

Vann wins Fest treasure hunt

Last week, when the clues for the 2013 Louisiana Peach Festival Treasure Hunt started being aired on the radio and published in the Ruston Daily Leader, many scrabbled trying to find the card that would lead them to a cash prize, but only one could claim it. This year, 17-year-old Morgan Vann was the lucky participant who claimed the $500.
Morgan, who will be a senior this fall at Cedar Creek, said this is the first year she got in the competitive spirit.

Fish dish earns Peach Cookery prize

When thinking of peach dishes, most would naturally gravitate toward peach cobbler, but each year locals test out their culinary skills to see what new peach dish they can conjure up for the annual Peach Cookery Contest.
Sara Maricelli, formerly of Covington and now of Ruston, took home the Grand Prize for the Adult Division on Friday with her rendition of Cajun Tilapia with Fresh Peach Salsa.
“I write an amateur food blog, so I am always looking for new recipes to try,” said Marcicelli.

Antique Car Show draws 84 entries in 14 classes

Car enthusiasts and general observers had the opportunity to appreciate a host of classic cars and trucks Saturday in downtown Ruston during the weekend’s festivities. Hosted by the Ruston Antique Car Club, the annual Louisiana Peach Festival Antique Classic Car Show drew a crowd of onlookers to see cars of various eras were displayed in the parking lot of Bancorp South.

Maton, Terrasas are All-Louisiana

It was a tough spring for Louisiana Tech University’s baseball team, which finished with a 19-37 overall record and went 6-21 against Western Athletic Conference teams.
But Phil Maton and Taylor Terrasas are making it bearable.
Sophomore pitcher Maton and senior infielder Terrasas were the Bulldogs’ representatives on the 2013 All-Louisiana collegiate squad announced by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association on Sunday.
Both players were second unit members.
