Notice is hereby given that I have completed the listings of all property in the Parish of Lincoln and have estimated the values thereon, and that said listing will be exposed in the Lincoln Parish Assessor's Office during office hours 8:00 am to 4:30 pm at the Lincoln Parish Police Jury Complex, 307 North Homer Street, Ruston, Louisiana for public inspection and correction for a period of 15 days, beginning August 15, 2013. Any taxpayer desiring to examine his assessment is required to call the Assessor's Office during said 15 day period.

Serious Crash On North Service Road

Car crushed in impact with 18-wheeler

At approximately 9:30 a.m. today, an 18-wheeler collided with a vehicle at the intersection of Eagle Drive and North Service Road East. At least one individual was airlifted away from the scene. Because emergency responders were still on the scene, information was unavailable as of press time. See Friday’s paper for the full story.

Rescued dog in dire need

4 Paws asks for assistance to pay for Chihuahua’s surgery

A sweet natured dog rescued by 4 Paws, Inc., in need of help is set to undergo emergency surgery today or no later than Friday.
Sue Martin, president of 4 Paws Rescue, Inc. in Ruston said that Deuce was brought to the 4 Paws rescue shelter last week with two broken legs and a possible broken hip.

Tech hosts summer program

Ten students from elementary, junior high and high schools around the region recently completed the week-long Science Technology Engineering Math (STEM) Student Experience summer science program at Louisiana Tech University.
Students from Delta Junior High School, Holly Ridge Elementary School, Ruston Junior High School, Ruston High School, Simsboro High School and Wossman High School attended the STEM program which consisted of hands-on activities about popular science issues such as energy generation, storage and conversion.

Most retail purchases exempt from state sales tax Aug. 2 and Aug. 3

Most retail purchases are exempt from the four percent state sales tax during the 2013 Louisiana Annual Sales Tax Holiday Aug. 2 and Aug. 3.
The exemption applies to most consumer purchases of tangible personal property under the following conditions:
• The customer buys and accepts delivery of eligible property;
• The customer places property on layaway;
• The customer acquires property that was previously placed on layaway; or

Help prevent WNV outbreak

The good news about the recent rains in north Louisiana means more water conservation and lessening of the drought conditions that have plagued the area for years now.
The bad news is those kinds of rain often bring standing water pools, in which mosquitoes breed — mosquitoes that could carry the West Nile Virus.
Louisiana’s West Nile virus season is off to a late start, probably because the cool spring apparently kept mosquito populations down, said Louisiana’s state epidemiologist.

Small wonder that New York Yankees pitcher Mariano Rivera grabbed the spotlight at the latest All-Star game. His perfect eighth-inning relief appearance not only helped the American League win the game, it showcased the kind of success story that Americans love.
Going from a life in a poor fishing village in Panama to the pitching mound in New York City is pretty impressive. It’s hard not to be inspired by the opportunity that America affords people who are willing to work hard and pursue their dreams — and wonder about those who haven’t had those chances.

Desperate need for stricter LTC

After Kathleen Blanco was elected governor in 2003, I had a meeting with her before her inauguration. One of the items I mentioned to her was the necessity to appoint a conscientious Louisiana Tax Commission (LTC), one that would ensure that the elected assessors in the state would accurately appraise property and not play favorites with assessments.
