Go green this summer and save a little, too

We are not even officially in the summer months and the temperature will hit the mid-90s by week’s end. Of course, as the mercury rises, so does the cost of keeping a home cool.
But while priority No. 1 will be staying comfortable as we begin to nudge into the triple digits, the Unites States Department of Energy recommends consumers adopt a whole-house approach to save a little green during the swelter summer months.

The upcoming hurricane season

My friend Mary did her student teaching at Plaza Towers Elementary School in Moore, Okla. That’s the school that was flattened on May 20 by a tornado that also killed some of the students.
“Saddest are the little kids that were lost at the school,” Mary posted in our Facebook conversation a few days after the storm. “Hardest part for me is that Moore is between work and home.”
The day of the storm, it took Mary two hours to get to her house. Last week, just about the time Mary and her area neighbors were getting over one storm, the nation’s heartland got popped again.

Tech trackters at NCAA meet

Ex-RHS star Hadnot among national meet entries

Trey Hadnot has more business to take care of in this 2013 track and field season.
So do several other members of the Louisiana Tech University program.
Hadnot, the former All-American and All-State sprint and relay star at Ruston High School, will be one of six members of the Tech squad who have qualified for the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championship meet that begins today in Eugene, Ore.
The meet will extend through Saturday at venerable Hayward Stadium.

Hester, Cox join Tech athletic staff

Louisiana Tech University head football coach Skip Holtz has announced the hiring of Kurt Hester as the athletic department’s head strength and conditioning coach and Justin Cox as the new director of football operations.
Hester joins the Louisiana Tech Family after serving as a National Director of Training for the D1 Sports Training Center in Nashville, Tenn., since 2008.

Ex-Grambling coach Stevens dies

Ed Stevens, a former head track and field coach and assistant football coach at Grambling State University, passed away this morning following a battle with esophageal cancer.
Stevens, a California native, had served as an assistant coach on the football staff of the late Tigers’ legend, Eddie Robinson, as well as directing the track and field program during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
