Forgan forges forward

Former Tech golfer finding success on European tour

Former Louisiana Tech golf standout Sam Forgan, a three‐time letterman for the Bulldogs, is currently finding success on a professional developmental tour based out of his native United Kingdom, placing in three of his last five tournaments.
Forgan is currently playing in the PGA EuroPro Tour, a developmental professional golf tour based in the United Kingdom.
“I am not surprised that he is doing so well because he has a heck of a swing and a good work ethic,” Louisiana Tech Head Coach Jeff Parks said.

Book signing set for tonight at Eddie Robinson Museum

Author Samuel G. Freedman will appear at a book signing at 5:30 p.m. Monday in the Doris Robinson Banquet Hall at the Eddie Robinson Museum.
Freedman’s book “Breaking The Line” tells the story of the season in black college football that transformed the sport and helped change the course of the civil rights movement.

R. L. “Lynn” May

R. L. “Lynn” May passed away on August 22, 2013 from a work related accident.  Services will be held on August 25, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Owens Funeral Home, Ruston, LA.  Visitation will be at 1:00 pm at the funeral home. 
Lynn was born August 11, 1949, reared in Gonzales, Louisiana and a resident of Simsboro, Louisiana for the last 40 years.  In 1979, Lynn and his wife Alyce formed R.L. May Construction.

Carl L. Holstead

Funeral services for Carl L. Holstead, age 71, of Choudrant will be held 2:00 PM Sunday August 25, 2013 at Douglas United Methodist Church. Officiating the service will be Rev. Jeremy Jones and Rev. Rolly Walker. Interment will follow at Douglas Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston. Mr. Holstead was born March 28, 1942 and passed away August 22, 2013. Mr. Holstead was a lifelong member and very active at Douglas United Methodist Church where he served as church treasurer and on many boards and committees.

Parish sales tax collections climb

A surge in oil and gas activity, plus projects at two local industries have pushed sales tax collections up 12.45 percent for the third quarter of this year over the same period in 2012.
Collections for April through June totaled approximately $8.5 million, up from $7.5 million last year, according to the latest figures given by the Lincoln Parish Sales and Use Tax Commission. Year-to-date-collections are up almost 11 percent at $16.5 million.

Building up balloters

Voter Registration Week set to begin

Lincoln Parish residents who want to learn more about voting, or who are not registered to vote and wish to sign up, have a special opportunity to do so this week during Voter Education Week.
The specially designated week is a project of the Louisiana Secretary of State’s office.
“The purpose is educate the public and to get people registered who are not registered and inform them about elections,” Lincoln Parish Registrar of Voters Dianna Stone said.

Water deal settled for UP fracking

Tainter Gate project near completion

The D’Arbonne Watershed Lake Commission has completed a contract with Southwestern Energy for the oil company to extract water from lake D’Arbonne to be used for fracking.
The contract agreement was reached following an uproar by water conservationists when SWN pulled 17 million gallons out of the Sparta Aquifer last spring.
