in
Fallin, Randy.jpg

Next week, we observe Labor Day. A federal holiday since 1894, Labor Day celebrates the achievements of American workers — people, like yourself, who work hard for their money. But to make progress toward your long-term financial goals, you need to do more than just earn money — you have to invest it wisely. And that takes work, too.
Fortunately, there’s no real mystery to the types of labor in which you’ll need to engage to become a good investor. Here are a few suggestions:

There comes a time for adult children to grow up

in
Moore, Byron.jpg

Question: Our daughter is nearly 30 and has moved back in with us again. She can’t seem to keep a job. We’re paying for her gas, her cell phone bill and even her car note. I feel trapped. We don’t want to be in this situation, but we’re not sure how to get out. What can we do to make our daughter financially responsible?
Answer: I am sure you don’t want to be in this situation, and I’d bet my bottom dollar you really love your daughter. But something else is true — you are in this situation by your own choosing. No one did this to you.

The new retirement: Making different choices

in
Conville, Bobby.jpg

“Retirement is an opportunity to open a new, active chapter in life.” Do you agree with that statement? An increasing number of Americans do, and it’s changing their whole approach to later life.
“People’s attitudes about retirement have changed,” said Donna Peterson, senior vice president in Retail Retirement at Wells Fargo Advisors. “People are looking at retirement as a time to be productive and active in a way that allows them more flexibility and freedom than they’ve had during their working years.”

Grambling State did a little fine tuning Saturday as the Tigers worked on situational scenarios in preparation of the upcoming season.
The G-Men open the 2013 season on Saturday as they play host to Alabama A&M at 6 p.m. at Robinson Stadium.
“The past few practices have gone pretty good,” GSU coach Doug Williams said following Saturday’s workout. “Today was more of a mental practice going over certain scenarios because we want the players to understand those kinds of things can arise during a game.

Louisiana Tech scrimmaged for under two hours at Joe Aillet Stadium as the team effectively closed fall camp Friday afternoon.
The team held one final shorts practice Saturday morning that focused more on the conditioning of the players rather than any game planning.
Tech was not only battling the general soreness of 18 straight days of practice but also hot weather as the temperature on the Field Turf surface of Joe Aillet Stadium eclipsed 106 degrees during Friday’s scrimmage.

Remember to register to vote before deadline

There’s no question about it: Louisianans love a good election. But candidates, campaigns, and all the trappings of running for office may not really be the heart of the matter.
After all, when you get right down it, elections are about voters.
This week is Voter Registration Week in the Bayou State, a week set aside for state and local election officials to educate the public about the mechanics of an election day and to emphasize registering to vote.

Physician cautions food choices

in

Are you aware that a very high percentage of the food you consume has been genetically modified? Genetically modified foods are foods and livestock fed that are produced from plants seeds that have undergone genetic manipulation by laboratory techniques. These techniques allow the plants to survive heavy spraying of pesticides as well as the weed killer Roundup.
The main modified crops are corn, soybeans, cotton, canola, sugar beets and alfalfa.
The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) urges physicians to advise their patients to avoid consuming genetically modified foods.
