Good deeds help flood victims

in

“It just kept coming.”
That’s how my friend described floodwaters rising to six inches in his Livingston Parish childhood home.
I have heard this chilling statement many times. In fact, it haunts me — as I’m sure it does many Louisiana residents.
A family friend said verbatim the same statement to me after Hurricane Katrina flooded her home. Another friend in Monroe described their house flooding earlier this year in the same way.
Here we are again.
More than 630 inches of rain passed through southeast Louisiana and Mississippi from Aug. 10-14 flooding thousands of homes.

The first test Kathryn Sloan ever took when she arrived to play soccer at Louisiana Tech was the annual preseason fitness test given by head coach Kevin Sherry.
To pass you have to complete the following:
• Run 115 yards in 20 seconds and back 115 yards in 30 seconds
• Rest 30 seconds
• Run 6x40 yard shuttles in 60 seconds
• Rest 75 seconds
• Repeat five times
Sloan did not pass that test, but the senior has yet to fail another one since her freshman season.

With historic flooding in South Louisiana, many residents and community leaders have taken it upon themselves to aid those who are in need of supplies and shelter.

At least 40,000 homes were damaged and 11 people have been killed during the flooding, leaving thousands stranded without homes or basic necessitates.

To help fill in the gaps left by the state and federal government, local organizations are asking residents of Lincoln Parish to donate food, water and supplies to be given to those in need.

One of men was deployed with the Region 8 Urban Search and Rescue team, while the other two relieved firefighters who went into the flood zone last weekend, Ruston Fire Department Public Education Officer Eric Brazzel said Tuesday.
The search and rescue team could be working as long as 14 days, Brazzel said. The team, made of personnel from the Ruston, Monroe, West Monroe and Ouachita Parish fire departments, will go door to door checking to make sure all residents are out.
